Hardscrabble Pano

One of the great traverses in Canyonlands NP is called Hardscrabble. There are some comforting little campsites at its base, where you experience either an evening of over-assuredness the night before or relief the night after…depending on which direction you’re heading. This is the approach to Hardscrabble from the northeast, across a long bottom. You’re not quite sure what to expect, with the beauty you’re faced with at the moment. But then you drive on, and it’s definitely passable, but definitely very slow going. Not quite as intimidating as Murphy’s Hogback from the other direction for the first time, but much longer of a traverse. Like I said, it’s passable, but I recommend with no shortage of caution.

  1. Great shot Code. Makes my kidneys hurt just looking at it.

  2. Thanks for your comment, Dave. My caption for this image is a bit misleading - it makes it sound as if you’re looking at Hardscrabble, but you’re not. It’s way off in the distance across the bottom, with the beginning ascent rising to the left just before where the river bends out of sight. That’s where the camp sites are located…as well as the largest spiders I’ve ever seen in the US. Ersh…
