Locals Only

This sign stands at the edge of Ringling, MT, and pretty much means what it says…bullet holes included. Ringling was named after the famous John Ringling of Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey circus fame and is now home to only 55 residents in a county called Meagher. Once a stop along “the Milwaukee Road” rail line, the artifacts of that era still loom over the landscape much the same as in many once-thriving western outposts. The very rail line which brought life to the region is the same that took it away once the routes were abandoned just over 25 years ago.

  1. Cody,
I found you via Justin Tadlock’s forum. Your photography is amazing and I like that you include a little narrative. I’ll be sure to visit on a regular basis for the inspiration!

  2. Hi Rebecca,

Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate your patronage and look forward to future communications. Tadlock’s theme is pretty unbelievable, I like your setup also - bookmarked!

  3. Um. Exactly what does that sign mean. I take it has something to do with it not being well maintained etc. and as such shouldn’t be used as a thoroughfare?

The bullet holes are a nice Montana addition to the sign though :)

  4. Hi Ramin,

Thanks for stopping by. You’re correct about the sign, it’s an unmaintained dead end road, but the part I like is the “Local Traffic Only”. It’s kind of like, “We encourage you not to drive on our road, but if you do and you’re not from around here we’re not helping you if you get stuck.” Maybe if my photo showed the desolate landscape around the sign, it might be easier to see it as a small town way of saying, “Stay Out!”
