Pond at Dusk
This evening I went for a drive, looking for a slightly different scene from what I typically post. I’ve been showing a lot of large expanses of land lately, wide shots that take up nearly 1/4 of the sky. This time I wanted to find something that still allowed me to convey a sense of space, but in a tighter composition…and using color. I came pretty close to getting what I was after with this shot, the reflection of the cloud leading you into the water and up around the bend past the cattails. Most of the sky looked similar to what is visible along the upper edge, gray and overcast. But a nice break in the clouds above me and to the west allowed some last light through, adding a glow to the landscape and creating a bit of a yin and yang effect with the warm and cool tones at play.
***Site Updates - I made a few quick changes that you might notice. I added a ‘Featured RSS’ section to the sidebar which will be where I highlight different sites, artists and resources each month. I also added ‘Related Posts’ to my RSS feed. I didn’t add the functionality to the site itself because it just adds too much busyness and competes with the photos. I’m considering it on single post pages, but haven’t quite figured out how to change the positioning within the post itself. I’ll keep working on it…

Beautiful subtle tones and reflections. The tighter comp works great. Do you find it’s hard to switch gears? If so, it doesn’t show.
Thanks, Diane. No, it wasn’t really hard, I just needed to watch for different elements. I tend to stare at the horizon all around me, or close to it anyway. This one just jumped out at me because I was able to use the impact of clouds in the shot without having to include the sky. Part of it was just luck, though, being in the right place at the right time…
