Tiny Island

During a walk along the Yellowstone River on Wednesday I took this capture, intrigued by the small island which exists in contrast to the darker surrounding water. I’m not sure how I feel about the waterway touching the edge of the image on the right side, but it still helps the eye travel through the scene. And those clouds…you just can’t beat the variety and magnitude of clouds here in Montana!

  1. Gorgeous landscape. It’s funny. It almost never occurs to me to use black and white, and in your images it looks so natural.

    Great image!

  2. Surprisingly, the last two days we have had huge, puffy, “mountainous” clouds here in Connecticut. Of course, I thought of you! The difference being that in Montana, you can see for miles in all directions and each direction might be filled with completely different formations. In Connecticut, we’re a lot more enclosed and surrounded by trees, so it’s difficult to see what’s headed our way! With my brother and father being native Montanans like yourself, I’m well aware of the term “Big Sky Country”, go ahead make fun! I can take it! ;-)

BTW- It looks like your “future post functionality” has worked very well, at least on my end. Hope you’re having a great time at your remote location.

  3. Boy, if I could just learn to type!! I’m sorry for the unbelievable lack of any editing on my part and for the multiple blatant GAPS…not just typos, but huge gaps in thought. I appreciate your comments Diane and Andreas, but you both should have given me a hard time. :-)

@Andreas - Much appreciated. I’ve always been fascinated by black and white images, likely in part because of my love for history and that just happens to be how things were photographed for quite a long time. I’d love to see you experiment with it sometime, you have a distinct style and it might translate well! Let me know if you come up something you’d like to share.

@Diane - Good cloud days, nice! I’m curious what kind of weather they finally turned into for you. Our weather changes so often here, so fast. A storm will move in from just about any direction, it’ll be snowing with fury and 15 minutes later it will be sunny again. Today was that crazy on a different scale…it was 70° outside! Tomorrow too. The rivers are going to jump several feet over the next few days, it always gets a little dicey this time of year with flooding. And last but not least, the ‘remote location’ was a lot of fun, I’ll be doing a post on it here in the next day or two…
