Nestled

I decided to post something that breaks from my traditional landscape style a bit. This small, busy scene caught my eye during a recent walk along the Yellowstone River. The cloud in the background makes the shot for me, adding some balance to the upper portion of the frame. I once had a photography instructor criticize me for presenting a busy image…which made me love such scenes that much more. Sure, there’s a point at which an image can lose visual appeal if the elements are too confusing, but having some structure to the composition really helps the eye work naturally.

  1. The shallow depth of field also works well here, by blurring the background. Helps to focus the eye in a “busy” scene. Something about the light here, creates a very interesting mood. Very well done! BTW- S-curves can be very addictive, once to start noticing them you seem to find them everywhere. :-)

  2. Ooops! Now I’ve got the typo bug. “to” should be “you”.

  3. Agreed, Diane, the DOF in the image does help work through all of the lines, I rarely shoot so narrow. It causes a neat effect and many photographers use it quite well. My lenses don’t really allow for some of the insanely fine DOF shots, such as with an f1.0 50mm lense, but I should start employing the technique more. And thanks for your comment on the S-curves…I’ll try not to drown your eye with them. :-)
