A Duotone Social

Missed a few days of posting; had a busy week and just couldn’t fit it all in. I’m able to get back to it now and want to announce a few things of interest. First I’d like to mention Neil Creek, a native Neil Creek, Australian Photographer and Blogger...of Australia who lives in Melbourne and is making an impressive foray into the heart of the online photographic community. I met Neil through my participation in the Fine Art Photoblog, but I’d been watching his site a bit prior to that so it was a chance opportunity within a chance opportunity…if you follow. His blog is full of great stuff, from his personal projects to community contests he puts on, there’s plenty to interest anyone with an affection for the art of photography. His is the Featured RSS on my site this month (see sidebar), and I encourage you to pass the link on to other photographers you might know…

So, the reason for my bringing up Neil is two-fold. First, he’s got a great blog started and I want to support him, bottom line. But the second part has to do with his interest in and love for 3D photography and could include you if you’d like. I’d not heard much about the technique of creating 3D out of 2D images before he started sharing his knowledge and I have to admit that I didn’t get it at first. I couldn’t get my eyes to ‘work’ and I couldn’t ’see’ any of the examples he provided as they were meant to be seen. Recently, though, I managed to break my eyes long enough to fix them…and wow, how utterly cool. Really, I encourage you to check out his 3D set on Flickr after getting acquainted with how to see them yourself. When you’ve got that mastered and can ’see’ the potential in this, here’s where he teaches you how to take/make them, and if you do that then you can enter his latest public contest - 3D For Everyone. Each person who enters receives a free pair of 3D ‘goggles’ for easier image viewing, and the overall winner of the project wins a really cool Loreo “3D Lens in a Cap” attachment for their digital SLR camera, valued at around $100. But why my interest in this particular contest, you ask? Well, it just so happens that Neil asked me to be a judge and I’d love to get some of my own readers involved. I know there are photographers among those who happen by this blog, so why not share a way in which they can get involved and show off some of their own handiwork? I can’t participate in the contest, of course, but I plan on submitting an example for general review. I’ve not yet converted any of my large landscapes into 3D, but can’t wait!! They’re going to be a great addition to my blog entries when I get the process down. In the meantime, go check out the links I provided and try your hand at the 3D bit…it brings new appreciation to your standard 2D photographs. (***WARNING - If you have certain eye issues, viewing these images is not recommended. See Neil’s disclaimer for more information.)

The next topic of interest is really being presented with a whisper, if that’s possible on a blog, but the other members of the Fine Art Photoblog and I have been discussing that maybe it’s time to take on another photographer or two on the site. Now, I can’t say for sure at this point, but it’s probably not a bad time to brush up your digital portfolio just in case… I’ll be updating here accordingly, so if you’re interested, be looking back for an official announcement.

Lastly, I decided to make a minor tweak in the way I post, or date my posts rather. See, I’m always posting for the previous day…I come home, start things up and there’s an empty slot for the day that just occurred and so I fill it. But by the time you read my posts they’re already from ‘yesterday’ based up on a calendar, even though they’re really fresh and new that same day you’re reading them. By simply offsetting things by a single day, I’ll now be “in time” with the rest of the world. Nothing major, but all new posts will be scheduled to go out at 9:30AM MST on the calendar day after the evening they are posted. Confused yet? Ha! You shouldn’t notice anything different really, I just thought I’d mention it

Finally, for today’s images I decided on the duotone images I processed of ‘people’ on my recent Smith River adventure. Color portraits are nice, but duotone just adds something to character that the busyness of color often seems to mask. Then again, I’m kind of biased toward the black and white end of photography, so…
