When Rain Doth Pour

So…it’s been a while since I’ve posted, yeah? I went from the front burner with my project work straight into the flames of a nasty computer virus that killed my system entirely. And now I’m rebuilding after several sleepless nights of trying to tie loose ends into pretty little bows, but I’m getting things in order.

Beyond my personal drama, here’s the weather. :-) Montana’s been under gray skies for the last week, like many places in the US. Fresh snow in the mountains, rivers brimming, saturated soil and the promise of warmer days. Maybe we’ll have floods, hopefully not, but definitely we’ll be having morels! Funny thing is, I’m not even a mushroom guy. Texture, taste, any of it…I’ll take a piece of fruit, thank you. But morels are different; their’s is an earthiness that does not overwhelm, but compliments rather. Just add them to soups and stews, sauces and gravy, fry them up, sauté them down; they’re pretty versatile but I wouldn’t try baking them into bread. Ha! Though I can’t say it’s good for you, not much is better than eating fried perch and morels on a warm summer evening. I’m sure I’ll be posting some images soon, but here’s a link to a post I did last year on the Livingston Photo Society. This was a single day’s worth, maybe 4 or 5 hours of hiking along the West Boulder. This year promises to be even better and I can’t wait to get started.

Today’s image comes from a recent drive north from Livingston with my friend Vic. I spied a break in the clouds off in the distance and headed toward it. We were rewarded with our first sunshine in days and the company of these friendly fellows.

  1. Yee-ha! A new post….well ya know, I was beginning to wonder. ;-) I love the way you’ve captured the horse coming toward the viewer. It really pairs well with the turbulent skies. I’m sorry to hear about your virus, but glad to see you were able to fix it. Geee Cody, your last response to my comment on “Boulder Snack” was an awfully nice thing to say! I guess I must have said just the right thing to receive “best fan” status, but I have to say you make it easy. You seem to really love what you do and enjoy sharing your experiences with others in a very down-to-earth, approachable way. I really enjoy visiting to see/hear about your latest adventure and hearing about any photo tips you might be willing to share. BUT, I often think you must get sick of seeing that you have a comment, and finding out it’s only me! ;-) Occasionally I give you a break from “me”, but I’m always checking to see what’s new!

Morels in Montana!!?? Last week, a photographer friend and I were in Amenia, NY ( beautiful farmland with rolling hills and open views in Eastern NY) when we stopped for a bit at a local market. They also had morels! He asked me if I had ever tasted one, and I said I had, but only as a child while living a short while in Missouri. I guess I always thought they were a southern thing. All that I know now is that they are extremely expensive here, and a bit of a delicacy. Now, of course, after seeing them there and reading your story, I’m interested to try them again. I better hurry tho, I’m not sure that they are around for very long?

I’ve heard you’ve been having the usual unpredictable spring weather. My father usually goes up to the Beartooths for a spring ski, but I guess the highway was closed due to 18ins of new snow. They ended up hiking up to Mystic Lake to fish instead. Unfortunately, there was 3ft of snow up there! Ha! They had a good time tho.

Well, I’m signing off now…..oh, my gosh, I think I just wrote a novel! ;-) Take care Cody.

  2. Wow….How beautiful!!

  3. @Diane - I made my comment about you being the best fan because it’s true. :-) Your comments are always so supportive and I always look forward to reading them. I’ve enjoyed making a connection and have to say my blog would have been a much quieter place without your feedback. Your dialog has given the place some life beyond the images and I’m grateful. — Morels, yes, Montana gets bumper crops…BUMPER. Two days ago my friend, Andrew, went out and came home with the biggest haul I’ve ever seen…I’ll be posting images of our evening morel fry in the next few days. I wish I could share some with you!

@Janet - Thank you for your comment, Janet, it is much appreceiated.
