Longshadow

I’ve been quite buried under a project recently, but have been able to get out on a few drives.  This image of last light comes from region of the state I just recently discovered…and it’s only about 30 minutes away from my home.  I’ve been crisscrossing the land in these parts for most of my life, it’s amazing to still find huge expanses of unknown roads and landscapes.  I love Montana…

  1. Beautiful, serene, calm photo with brilliant shadows.

  2. Funny you should post “Gamma Check” at this moment. When I first viewed “Longshadow” I was drawn to the dramatic darks and lights and beautiful textures, but as I looked at it I felt perhaps it was a bit too dark (especially the hillside in the background.) Then after reading “Gamma Check” I went back and looked through the photos of recent past and feel they all have a slight darkness to them. I’m dealing with a similar issue, when I go to post a photo on my blog I need to darken it in order to have it read the way it does in processing. Blogspot seems to lighten photos quite a bit when uploaded. Then when I actually go to print a photo, I need to lighten it again. Ugh! Thanks for your post, very informative. (as always :-) )

  3. @Diane - Well, if there’s one viewer who I want to pay attention to, it’s you. You’ve been with me since the beginning I believe, so you’re familiar with my images over time…and little is more valuable. With ‘Longshadow’ specifically, the hillside in the back should basically be black with no details to speak of. Very few anyway. The hill was in full, dark shadow while stark, direct light shone on the foreground. I’ve moved in this direction with my photography a bit, which I think people are noticing, so some of the change is, as Scott Coulter put it, ‘artistic choice’. But there are definitely other factors involved as well. I’ll go into these in my next post, but I appreciate your feedback very much. Also, regarding your images and their own color shift, it may not be Blogger changing your files…so to speak. If you’re not working on the images in sRGB, when you save/upload them for web use, then yes, shifts will occur. I battled this for a long time… Are you using Photoshop to edit your images?

@cieldequimper - Thank you for comment, it’s actually quite timely in that you appreciated the shadows. It seems my images have been drifting darker and darker, but in this instance it was intentional. Thanks again for your feedback and support.
